Cultural differences

7 oktober 2014 - Quito, Ecuador

Staying in Quitó I noticed some cultural differences. Some are easy to spot others are more subtle.
One of the first thing I noticed is the recycling system. All the trash goes in one bag, and people come by and search the trash for things they can recycle. Not the best system but there are companies working on changing this.
Second are jobs that are automated in Europe but are done by people here, such as parking meters. There is people helping you park and watching your car for a minor fee. Honestly if I wasn't with Ecuadorians when it happened I would have tought they tried to rip me off because I was a tourist.
You are not allowed to tank yourself, because gasoline is dangerous. So there is people doing this for you.
There are also more subtle things like the key in the locks turn the other way or the water flushes the other way. Well this last part is mainly caused by at what side of the Ecuador you are on.
The Intinan museum exactly on the Ecuador demonstrates this. There are vortexes going different ways at different sides of the Ecuador. And one the Ecuador? There is no vortex. Fascinating! We also did some things you can only do on the Ecuador. Ever tried to place an Egg vertically on the head of a nail? Well I have done this, on the Ecuador!
The museum also learns about the tribes that lived and live here today. There is one famous tribe that has a technique to shrink the head of a deceased. Mostly used on it's enemies. The head was then placed on a stick to scare of invaders. For us Belgians we have seen this in some comic books such as Jommeke. It's interesting to learn where it's origin lies.
